WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan, bicameral resolution led by U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) calling for the immediate release of Michigander Paul Whelan from authorities under the Russian government. A companion resolution was introduced and passed in the U.S. House of Representatives in June 2023. The Senate resolution can be found by clicking here.
“The Russian government’s unjust imprisonment of Paul Whelan is a political sham that has gone on far too long,” said Senator Peters. “I’m pleased the Senate unanimously passed this resolution which demonstrates our commitment to bringing this nightmare to an end, and ensuring Paul returns home to be reunited with his family and loved ones.”
“Paul Whelan needs to come home. Paul has spent more than 1,741 days languishing in a Russian prison without any due process or credible evidence presented against him. I’m glad the Senate came together to call on the Russian government to release Paul. I will continue to work with the Biden Administration, my colleagues and Paul’s family to end his unjust imprisonment and bring him home,” said Senator Stabenow.
Peters and Stabenow have continuously pressed for Whelan’s release since he was detained in Russia more than four years ago and will continue to work with his family and the U.S. Department of State to secure his safe return to Michigan.
