Senate Passes Peters, Ernst Bipartisan Resolution Honoring Blue Star Mothers

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) applauded Senate passage of a bipartisan resolution they introduced designating February 1, 2020 as Blue Star Mothers Day. This day of recognition honors the many sacrifices and contributions mothers of servicemembers make for our troops and celebrates the 78th anniversary of the first Blue Star Mothers gathering in Flint, Michigan.

“Blue Star Mothers represent an unwavering pillar of support for each other and for our brave men and women in uniform,” said Senator Peters, a former Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Their hard work continues to inspire a grateful nation. I am proud to partner with Senator Ernst on this bipartisan resolution that celebrates Blue Star Mothers and their tireless dedication to service, and I look forward to continue working to support all of their efforts in Michigan and across the country.”

“Since World War II, countless mothers of our nation’s servicemembers have volunteered their efforts and made sacrifices to support our troops and to do their part on the home front as part of the Blue Star Mothers of America. In fact, mothers in Iowa played a pivotal role in helping form some of the organization’s very first chapters,” said Senator Joni Ernst, the first female combat veteran to serve in the U.S. Senate. “I’m honored to be able to mark their tireless and critical work and contributions to our nation by partnering with my colleague Senator Gary Peters on legislation officially celebrating February 1st as Blue Star Mothers Day.”

“We are proud mothers of children who are veterans or are currently serving in our military,” said Elizabeth Bohannon, President of the Department of Michigan Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. “Others, including dads who are interested in supporting our military are also welcomed as Associate members.  Our mission includes supporting all armed forces, veterans, and fallen military families. The Blue Star Mothers of America are grateful that Senator Peters passed this resolution to honor those who have raised and stand behind our country’s heroes.”

The 198 active chapters of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. continue to build a supportive community both for veterans and the mothers of servicemembers. These chapters organize events in Michigan and around the nation to help pack and ship care packages to servicemembers, visit hospitalized veterans, help homeless veterans, support wounded warriors and honor fallen heroes during funeral services.
