Peters, Local Leaders Highlight $73 Million in Federal Funding from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to Replace 85-Year-Old Lafayette Street Bridge
BAY CITY, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) stopped in Bay City today during his annual motorcycle tour across Michigan. Peters was joined by Trevor Keyes, President and CEO of the local economic development agency Bay Future Inc., and Bay County Road Commission Chairman Bill Schumacher to highlight the importance of federal funding through the bipartisan infrastructure law that will help replace the aging 85-year-old Lafayette Street Bridge. Peters helped enact the infrastructure law and secure a $73 million federal grant to support reconstruction of the Lafayette Street Bridge. Peters, Schumacher, and Keyes held a press conference in Bigelow Park, located near the Lafayette Street Bridge.
“This is a game-changing federal investment that will both repair and upgrade the Lafayette Street bridge to ensure it remains operational for residents, workers, and businesses for years to come,” said Senator Peters.
“Folks in the Bay Region and communities across our state depend on safe, reliable roads and bridges every single day, whether it’s to get to work, school, the grocery store, or their doctors’ appointments,” Peters continued. “By making these investments now to improve our infrastructure, we can also help encourage local economic growth in the long-run while supporting good-paying jobs for Michiganders.”
“The Lafayette Bridge project has been a city priority for years, and thanks to Senator Peters’ leadership in the Senate, we are receiving the funding we need to get this critical infrastructure project across the finish line,” said Chris Girard, Bay City 6th Ward Commissioner. “Senator Peters is always working to find solutions to issues important to Michiganders. That’s why he’s been named the most effective U.S. Senators. Senator, we appreciate you fighting to bring federal resources back to Bay City.”
“The workers and businesses of our communities — from small businesses to manufacturers to health care organizations — all rely on strong, safe, resilient infrastructure,” said Trevor Keyes, President & CEO of Bay Future, Inc. “We thank Senator Peters for diligently working to secure these sorely needed federal resources to upgrade a critical piece of infrastructure in our Bay County community that supports long-term economic growth throughout our region.”
“Replacing the Lafayette Bridge will eliminate routine bridge closures, and will provide a reliable crossing for families,” said Bill Schumacher, Chairman of the Bay County Road Commission. “We thank Senator Peters for his support of the bipartisan infrastructure law, which is helping fund this transformational project that will improve transportation in Bay City and the Bay Region for decades to come.”
Peters – an avid and longtime motorcycle rider – was joined by guest riders on his ride to Bay City on his annual motorcycle tour.
