Water Quality and Safety Improvements Made Possible by Funding Peters Secured

BENTON HARBOR, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) and Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammed highlighted new federal funding secured to help make improvements to the Benton Harbor water system. Peters secured $800,000 through the government funding bill signed into law in December to support upgrades to the Benton Harbor water system. This funding will support the city’s efforts to improve water quality and safety for residents, including by upgrading its water filtration plant, replacing fire hydrants, and other system enhancements. During the event, Peters toured the Benton Harbor Water Filtration Plant to discuss the coming upgrades with Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammed, along with City Manager Ellis Mitchell and water consultant John S. Young Jr. With the support of federal and state partners, the City of Benton Harbor has already replaced over 99 percent of its lead pipes.

“We need to do everything we can to ensure all Michiganders have access to safe drinking water,” said Senator Peters. “I was proud to secure this federal funding that will help improve Benton Harbor’s water infrastructure and support their ongoing efforts for the residents of Benton Harbor.”

“On behalf of the City of Benton Harbor, we are grateful to see taxation with representation at work in the leadership of Senator Gary Peters,” said Mayor Muhammed. “He has been a constant advocate for the City of Benton Harbor and the Greater Southwest Michigan."

Peters championed this local, high-impact public project that will improve water quality and safety for Benton Harbor residents by helping to make needed investments in the water filtration plant, replacing fire hydrants, and implementing other necessary enhancements to the water system.

Peters is committed to ensuring all Michiganders and American have access to clean and safe drinking water. Peters helped enact the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which made a historic investment in clean drinking water, including dedicated funding to replace lead service lines and address PFAS contamination. In the recent government funding bill signed into law, Peters additionally helped secure $30.5 million for the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) lead testing in schools program, $25 million for its efforts to reduce lead in drinking water, and $7 million to support its work to improve drinking water infrastructure resilience and sustainability.
