PHOTO: Peters Meets With Labor Secretary Nominee Julie Su, Urges Swift Senate Confirmation

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement after meeting with Julie Su, nominee for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor:

“Deputy Secretary Su has a proven record of standing up for American workers and is well-qualified to serve as Labor Secretary. She has broad, strong support from the labor community and would provide an important and diverse perspective. I hope the Senate will quickly confirm her and we can continue building on efforts to expand skills training programs, support good-paying union jobs and protect workers’ rights.”

Peters grew up in a union household and is a champion for Michigan and American workers. His father was an NEA teacher and his mother was a nurse’s aide, who worked with the SEIU to organize her workplace and his father-in-law is a UAW Local 5690 retiree. Peters is a strong advocate for workers’ right to collectively bargain and fight for higher wages, better benefits and safer workplaces. He has authored and helped pass key legislation into law that is critical for Michigan workers, including the bipartisan infrastructure law, CHIPS and Science Act and Inflation Reduction Act that will create good-paying, union jobs, rebuild our infrastructure, strengthen our supply chains, bolster domestic manufacturing and invest in the future of mobility. Peters championed the Butch Lewis Act, which was signed into law in 2021 and secured pensions for millions of American workers. He is also a cosponsor of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act to ensure workers have the right to organize and collectively bargain.
