Peters Votes to Prevent Default, Protect American Economy

WASHINGTON, DC –U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement after helping the Senate pass the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act to prevent a default and protect the American economy and key priorities for Michigan:

“Allowing our nation to default would have been catastrophic, risking an economic crisis and significant job losses, higher prices, and Americans’ hard-earned retirement savings. No one gets everything they want in a negotiation, but this bipartisan legislation protects our economy and priorities that are important to Michigan, including Medicare and Social Security benefits, lower prescription drug costs for seniors from the Inflation Reduction Act, and long-overdue VA benefits and funding for our nation’s veterans that we delivered in the PACT Act – all while reducing our deficit. That’s why I voted for it.”
