WASHINGTON, DC –Below is a statement from U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) on today’s Senate passage of legislation authorizing construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline:
“There are still many outstanding questions on the environmental impact of building the Keystone XL Pipeline, and I do not believe Congress should expedite this project without knowing the full risks to our environment and public health. I am disappointed that the Senate failed to pass my commonsense amendments that would protect Michigan's environment by enhancing oversight of aging pipelines like the one running underneath the Straits of Mackinac and studying the effects of by-products like the petroleum coke that was stored along the Detroit River. Rather than spending time passing legislation that has no chance of being signed into law, Congress should come together and focus on strengthening the middle class, supporting our small businesses and growing our economy."
