WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to block the Trump Administration from terminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“The DACA program was created to help thousands of hardworking young people, who were brought to this country through no fault of their own, step out of the shadows and make vital contributions to our communities. Dreamers in Michigan and across the country are health care professionals working tirelessly on the frontlines of the Coronavirus pandemic, small business owners creating the jobs that will help rebuild our economy, and public servants working in countless other fields on behalf of our nation.
“I applaud today’s decision, which will ensure that nearly 700,000 young people will be able to continue performing their essential roles during this critical time. Moving forward, the Senate must pass bipartisan legislation to give hardworking DACA recipients the chance to become American citizens.”
