Peters Statement on Reported Chemical Attack in Idlib Province in Syria

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today released the following statement regarding reports of a chemical weapon attack in Idlib province in Syria:

“My heart goes out to the innocent civilians, including children, who were killed during the extremely disturbing and inhumane chemical attack in Idlib province. This is yet another reprehensible, shameful and illegal chemical attack on the Syrian people by their own government.

“The Syrian people have been forced to endure horrific acts of terror under the ruthlessness of Bashar al-Assad’s government. Assad indiscriminately slaughters his own people with military assistance from Russia and Iran and has clearly lost all legitimacy to rule and protect the Syrian people. While I continue to believe that a political solution is the only path to a lasting and sustainable peace in Syria, Bashar al-Assad – the perpetrator of countless attacks that have killed hundreds of thousands of people – simply cannot be part of that solution.”
