WASHINGTON, D.C. -U.S. Senator Gary Peters issued the following statement on President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland, who currently serves as Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, to serve on the United States Supreme Court:
“The President has a constitutional responsibility to nominate Justices to the Supreme Court, and the Senate has a constitutional responsibility to consider those nominees. I am pleased that President Obama fulfilled his duty by submitting Merrick Garland as a Supreme Court nominee, and I urge my Senate colleagues to fulfill ours by conducting a fair hearing process and holding a vote on the Senate floor. I look forward to thoroughly evaluating Mr. Garland’s qualifications to serve on our nation’s highest court, a pillar of our democracy that is too important to operate at less than full strength.”
