Peters Statement on Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Washington, DCBelow is a statement from U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) on Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ meeting with the Russian Ambassador:

“Attorney General Sessions’ statements to the Senate Judiciary Committee are just the latest in troubling pattern of Trump Administration and campaign officials covering up their interactions with the Russian government. Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and National Security Advisory Michael Flynn both resigned after misleading the public about their connections with Russian officials, and President Trump continues to lavish praise on Russian President Vladimir Putin – a man who very clearly attempted to undermine America’s democratic institutions.

“The American people deserve an independent, thorough investigation into Russia’s interference in our election, and the fact that Attorney General Sessions misled the committee and failed to disclose his meetings shows that he is not capable of leading this effort objectively. Attorney General Sessions should immediately recuse himself from this investigation, and a special prosecutor should be appointed to examine any association or coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as efforts to cover up those interactions. If Attorney General Sessions refuses to take these steps, he is unfit to serve as our nation’s highest law enforcement officer and he must resign.”
