WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today released the following statement after passage of legislation Peters cosponsored to expand sanctions on Iran. Included in the legislation is an amendment to impose new sanctions on Russia and allow Congress to review any efforts by the Trump Administration to ease Russian sanctions.
“Russia must answer for its extensive efforts to undermine the fundamental tenets of our democracy and their direct threats to our NATO and European allies. This legislation is an important first step by Congress to put a check on the Trump Administration’s failure to stand up against continued Russian aggression. Today’s vote sends a clear signal that Russia will face serious consequences and international isolation if they fail to change course and continue interfering in our democratic elections.
“I am glad that Congress has overwhelmingly voted to impose new sanctions on Iran. For too long, Iran’s state sponsorship of terrorism and their repeated ballistic missile tests in defiance of a UN Security Council Resolution have destabilized the Middle East and threatened Israel, our strongest ally in the region. These expanded sanctions will help curtail the threat Iran poses to our allies and the entire global community.”
