Peters, Stabenow Announce Over $5.2 Million in Funding for West Michigan Airports

Grants Made Possible by the American Rescue Plan Will Go Toward Improving Gerald R. Ford International Airport and Muskegon County Airport

DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) announced $5,288,605 in federal funding has been awarded to two airports in West Michigan. Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids will receive $4,882,136 and Muskegon County Airport will receive $406,469. This funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation and is supplemented through the historic American Rescue Plan that Peters and Stabenow helped enact earlier this year. It will allow the airports to upgrade their critical infrastructure. Gerald R. Ford International Airport’s grant will go toward reconstructing the existing service road to enable the safe movement of vehicles and ground service equipment, and making improvements to drainage in the area where aircraft are parked, loaded, refueled, and maintained. The grant for Muskegon County Airport will go toward reconstructing the airport’s existing rotating beacon, and repairing and sealing runways and taxiway surfaces.

“Michigan airports play a critical role in connecting people and businesses across the state to important markets and destinations,” said Senator Peters. “This funding we secured through the American Rescue Plan will allow Gerald Ford International Airport and Muskegon County Airport to make necessary upgrades to their infrastructure to ensure they can continue providing safe and reliable air travel.”

“Having reliable and safe air service is crucial for Michigan tourism, commerce, and economic development,” said Senator Stabenow. “This grant is an important investment in the infrastructure of our airports and will help our communities rebound from the pandemic.”
