Peters, Stabenow Announce Over $4,447,000 in Funding for Southeast Michigan Fire Departments
DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) announced $4,447,072 in federal funding has been awarded to three fire departments in Southeast Michigan to recruit and retain additional personnel. This funding comes from the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program. The following municipalities will receive funding:
- Huron Township: $656,800
- Oakland County Fire Authority: $541,944
- Shelby Township: $3,248,328
“It is important that our fire departments have the resources to attract and retain staff to ensure they can serve families and businesses,” said Senator Peters, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “These grants will help fire departments in Southeast Michigan bring on additional staff to help protect families in their communities.”
“Our firefighters put their lives on the line to protect our families, homes, and communities,” said Senator Stabenow. “These new resources will help Southeast Michigan fire departments make sure there is always someone there to answer the call in an emergency.”
“Thank you Senator Peters and Senator Stabenow for working to ensure that smaller fire departments can compete for significant and impactful federal funding,” said Huron Township Fire Department Chief James Hinojosa. “The Huron Township Fire Department looks forward to using this SAFER grant to recruit and retain its force of more than two dozen on-call firefighters, who protect and serve the township every day.”
