WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow today announced that the Groveland Township Fire Department will receive $244,809 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program to help hire two new full-time firefighters.
“Local families and businesses depend on the Groveland Township Fire Department to keep residents and property safe and secure,” said Senator Peters. “This funding will help the department replenish its fulltime staff, which will better prepare firefighters to be responsive to fires and emergencies.”
"Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our families, homes, and communities," said Senator Stabenow. "These resources will help Groveland Township Fire Department make sure there is always someone there to answer the call in an emergency."
“Groveland Township appreciates the work Senators Peters and Stabenow have done to maintain this worthwhile grant program at the Federal level,” said Steve McGee, Groveland Township Fire Chief. “Our department’s staffing, like many other public agencies, decreased in 2008 due to the financial crisis. This grant will help our community gain the critical staff needed to respond to an emergency.”
The SAFER Program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The purpose of the program is to ensure that fire departments nationwide are fully staffed and equipped to strengthen the Nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards.
