Peters, Stabenow Announce $184,500 in Federal Support for Colon Township and Hart Area Fire Departments

WASHINGTON, D.C - U.S. Senators Gary Peters (MI) and Debbie Stabenow (MI) today announced that Colon Township and the Hart Area Fire Department will receive $184,500 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to improve operations and safety. The funding comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program.

Colon Township will receive $132,500 to replace their self-contained breathing apparatuses. The Hart Area Fire Department will receive $52,000 to purchase new radios.

“It’s critical that our local fire departments have the resources they need to respond to emergencies safely and effectively,” said Senator Peters. “These grants will ensure that the fire departments in Colon Township and Hart are able to best serve their communities.”

“Our firefighters put their lives on the line to protect our families, homes, and communities,” said Senator Stabenow. “These new resources will help keep the public safe and give our first responders the equipment they need to do their jobs more safely and effectively.”

“It’s long overdue that we get new self-contained breathing apparatuses. The health and safety of our staff is a top priority. This new equipment will help our firefighters protect the community more safely,” said Matt Overholt, Colon Township Fire Chief. 

“Communication is so important during times of emergency. These new radios will allow our staff to answer a call for help more quickly and efficiently,” said Mark Haynor, Hart Fire Chief.
