Peters Recognizes Cinco de Mayo

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement honoring the celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which Mexican forces held back an invasion by French forces:

“Today as we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we remember and honor the bravery, resilience and solidarity of the Mexican forces who fought so bravely. As communities in Michigan and across the country commemorate this historic day with parades and festivals, we celebrate Mexican-American heritage and recognize the many contributions that have shaped our country’s history.

“From entrepreneurs to military servicemembers to community leaders, members of the Hispanic community are constantly working to fulfill the promise of the American Dream. As Americans from all walks of life, we share values that everyone should have the opportunity to obtain a quality education, find a good-paying job and build a better life for their family.

“As we join with family and friends to celebrate this important victory from over 150 years ago, we remain committed to bringing that same spirit of unity to the challenges we face today so that we can grow a stronger economy, pass comprehensive immigration reform and reform our criminal justice system. Working together, we can ensure that our country is always a place where if you work hard and play by the rules, you can build a better life for yourself and for your family.”
