WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement after meeting with Canadian Ambassador to the United States David MacNaughton, who began serving as Ambassador in March:
“I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with Ambassador MacNaughton and discuss several important issues facing both Michigan and Canada. We discussed the importance of protecting our Great Lakes, which provide drinking water for 40 million people in Canada and the United States, and support our vital fishing, shipping, agricultural and tourism industries. I reiterated my call to stop the proposed nuclear waste storage site less than a mile from Lake Huron in Kincardine, Ontario, which poses catastrophic risks to this treasured natural resource.
Canada is America’s closest trading partner, and we discussed efforts to promote trade and commerce between our two nations, particularly the need to enhance our busiest border crossings. I will continue working in Washington to support construction of the Gordie Howe Bridge, the expansion of the customs plaza at the Blue Water Bridge and reduction in wait times at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge to ensure the secure and efficient flow of people and goods across our border. Our meeting was very productive, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen the relationship between Michigan and Canada so we can work together to tackle the issues facing both countries.”
