Peters Delivers Commencement Address at Oakland University

ROCHESTER, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) today delivered the commencement address to Oakland University’s School of Business Administration, School of Education and Human Services, and the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Peters highlighted the outstanding education students receive at Oakland University and the importance of graduates giving back to communities.

The complex problems confronting us today require both specialized training and the ability to draw from an array of perspectives and disciplines. The incredible education graduates received at Oakland University has been steeped in professional training in critical fields like science, technology, engineering and math,” said Senator Peters. “Most importantly, the education at Oakland has also been well-rounded, giving students a foundation in liberal arts that will allow for new perspectives to problems, the seeking out of creative solutions and the opportunity to serve as leaders in communities.

Peters was a former adjunct professor at Oakland University, where he taught Strategic Management and Business Policy. His wife, Colleen, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications in 1987 from Oakland University.

Service is the cornerstone of our democracy. Our system does not work unless people like today’s graduates are actively engaged in the community,” added Senator Peters. “Whether it’s attending a local school board meeting, volunteering with a community service group or advocating for an important cause in your life, a dedication to public service is key to building a brighter future for Oakland County, for Michigan and for our country.”
