Peters Commemorates Renaming of Detroit Grand River Post Office to “Rosa Louise McCauley Parks Post Office”

DETROIT, MI — U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), U.S. Postal Service District Manager Richard Moreton, and the Rosa Parks Family Foundation held a dedication ceremony to rename the Grand River Post Office in Detroit the “Rosa Louise McCauley Parks Post Office.” Members of Rosa Parks’ family, including her niece Rhea McCauley, also attended and participated in the event.

In the House of Representatives, Tlaib led the legislation to rename the Post Office building located at 4744 Grand River Avenue, Detroit, Michigan after Rosa Parks, mother of the civil rights movement. Peters helped pass this legislation in the Senate. In December, the bill was signed into law. The building is located just a block away from Rosa Parks Boulevard and located near her home when she lived in Detroit.

“Rosa Parks’ story is synonymous with the fight for racial equality in America and will forever symbolize this city’s strength and resilience,” said Senator Peters. “I was proud to help pass the legislation in the Senate to rename this building in her honor, and I’m grateful that it will continue to serve the community she called home while carrying on her legacy for future generations.”

“It is an incredible honor to recognize Mother Rosa Louise McCauley Parks with a renaming of the Grand River Post Office here near her home in Detroit,” said Congresswoman Tlaib. “I thank President Biden, Senator Stabenow and Senator Peters, USPS Michigan 1 District and the McCauley & Parks family for their support in the introduction and passage of this bill. May this dedication and ceremony serve as a continual reminder of the lasting impact Mother Rosa Louise McCauley Parks made on Detroit and our district’s history and may we continue to honor her legacy as the mother of the civil rights movement.”

“Rosa Parks changed our nation's history by courageously sitting down in order to stand up for human dignity, a commitment she carried on throughout her life,” said Senator Stabenow. “Naming this post office after her is one special way that Michiganders can honor her heroism, bravery, and the critical role she played in the civil rights movement.”

“My Auntie Rosa made a lasting impact on so many lives, not only as a freedom fighter, but as a beloved member of our family, and a leader in our community in Detroit,” said Rhea McCauley, niece of Rosa Louise McCauley Parks. “Our family is proud to partner with Congresswoman Tlaib to dedicate the post office near her Detroit home in her honor. I am thankful for the opportunity to continue to carry on her powerful legacy for generations to come.”
