Peters Announces Michigan Economic Listening Tour

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Gary Peters announced that he will launch a Michigan Economic Listening Tour next week, meeting with Michigan businesses, educators and workers to hear from different segments of the state’s economy about how he can best represent them in Washington.

Senator Peters was recently appointed to serve on the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, where he focuses on a range of economic and small business issues, including interstate commerce, manufacturing and the automotive industry. His tour will cover several important sectors of Michigan’s economy, including workforce training, education for high-skilled jobs and the needs of businesses across the state.

“My top priority in the Senate is to help create good jobs in our state, grow our economy and strengthen our middle class,” said Senator Peters. “I’m looking forward to meeting with businesses and groups across the state to discuss how we can best invest in Michigan’s talented workforce, support small businesses and entrepreneurs, and strengthen the diversity of Michigan’s economy.”

Next week, Senator Peters will stop in Kalamazoo to tour Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine and Grand Rapids to tour Grand Valley State University’s School of Engineering and discuss the importance of an educated workforce for Michigan’s future. Senator Peters will also stop in Lansing, where he will tour Niowave, Inc., a company that manufactures superconducting linear accelerators. On Thursday, Senator Peters will speak to the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber of Commerce, and on Friday, he will travel to Flint to address the Flint-Genesee Job Corps graduation and discuss the importance of training a skilled workforce that can compete globally.

Additionally, Senator Peters will meet with community economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, local businesses and workers in each city to discuss how Congress can create a climate where businesses of all sizes can thrive and create jobs. Peters recently attended the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Annual Celebration dinner to discuss the needs of small businesses in the Grand Traverse region.
