Peters to Serve as Ranking Member of Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard Subcommittee
WASHINGTON, DC –U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, announced that he has been appointed to serve as Ranking Member on the Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard Subcommittee. Peters was also named to the Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security; the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet; and the Subcommittee on Science, Space, and Competitiveness.
“Michigan’s economy depends heavily on our natural resources, especially our Great Lakes, which support more than 500,000 jobs in Michigan,” said Senator Peters. “I am honored to serve as the Ranking Member on the Oceans Subcommittee, where I will continue to focus on protecting the health of our Great Lakes and waterways that are critical to our economy and way of life.”
As Ranking Member on the Oceans Subcommittee, Senator Peters will work to promote maritime commerce and protect marine living resources. Senator Peters will also focus on the economic and environmental impacts of climate change policy and oversee the Coast Guard’s operations in the Great Lakes.
The Oceans Subcommittee is responsible for legislation and oversight of matters that impact our oceans and coasts including coastal zone management, fisheries and marine animals, oceans, Coast Guard operations, weather and atmospheric activities and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“My top priority in the Senate is creating good jobs in Michigan, growing our economy and strengthening our middle class,” said Senator Peters. “I am committed to working with my colleagues from both parties on these subcommittees to promote innovation, create jobs and ensure we have a highly-skilled and competitive workforce.”
As a member of the Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety and Security, Senator Peters will work to ensure safe, efficient air travel and maintain air travel availability in Michigan’s rural areas.
On the Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet Subcommittee, Senator Peters will focus on policies that drive technological innovation and create jobs while protecting consumers. He will also continue to fight to preserve net neutrality for small businesses, startups and consumers.
Senator Peters will also work to promote policies that increase American competitiveness in advanced manufacturing and other industries, as well as promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math education to train American workers for the high-skilled jobs of the future as a member of the Subcommittee on Science, Space, and Competitiveness.
