WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) helped introduce a bipartisan resolution condemning Hamas – the Iranian-backed terrorist group responsible for the premeditated, coordinated, and brutal terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023 – and demanding that it release all hostages and return them to safety immediately. It is estimated that more than 200 people – including Americans – were abducted and are currently being held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Some of the hostages are children and the elderly, who Hamas has threatened to execute and broadcast their executions publicly.
“The more than 200 people currently being held hostage by Hamas are not just numbers on a piece of paper. They are human beings – friends, mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers,” said Senator Peters. “This bipartisan resolution demonstrates our unwavering support for the Israeli people and demands that Hamas safely return these individuals to their loved ones and communities.”
The text of the resolution can be found here.
Peters joined the Jewish Federation of Detroit at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield to stand with the community following Hamas’ deadly terrorist attacks on Israel. Peters also recently joined Jewish leaders at the Woodward Avenue Shul in Royal Oak to discuss his efforts to support the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP), which helps houses of worship protect their facilities and communities against potential threats. In recent years, Peters led bipartisan legislation to reauthorize this program and ensure it continues to have sufficient funding. The program has seen an increased demand as hate crimes and related threats of violence have risen in recent years.
