WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) released the following statement today as the U.S. Senate passed trade promotion authority legislation:
“Congress should be focused on policies that will create American jobs, boost American exports and help our businesses compete in markets around the world. I cannot support this trade promotion authority legislation that lacks strong enforcement measures to protect American workers and drastically curbs Congress’ ability to shape future trade agreements.
“I am very concerned that passage of this trade promotion authority bill will pave the way for a Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal that could hurt Michigan workers and cost thousands of American manufacturing jobs. As currently negotiated, the Trans-Pacific Partnership fails to address currency manipulation, closed markets and unfair labor practices, and could allow countries like China to join the agreement down the road without Congressional approval.
“American workers can compete with anyone in the world on a level playing field, and Congress must ensure that other countries are playing by the same trade rules. I will continue to work with my colleagues to promote policies that help support our workers, grow our businesses and strengthen our economy.”
