WZZM ABC 13 Grand Rapids: Sen. Gary Peters examines security, humanitarian challenges at U.S.-Mexico border

Sen. Gary Peters, a democrat from Michigan, visited the U.S.-Mexico border over the Memorial Day weekend. The bipartisan visit gave the senator the opportunity to assess the security needs and humanitarian challenges at the southern border.
“I was grateful to have the opportunity to hear directly from the men and women on the ground about the new set of challenges they face in securing our Southern border,” said Peters.
Senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) also went on the official visit.
“It’s clear that we need to rethink how to manage our borders and adapt to the changing populations and circumstances we face," said Peters. "These pressures are causing ripple effects across the country, including at Michigan’s Northern border."
Michigan's first-term senator said he is working to secure additional resources to help strengthen security at the board.
A news release said Peters has been a supporter of security at both the northern and southern borders. Earlier this year, the senator introduced legislation to address staffing shortages at ports of entry in Michigan and throughout the country.
