WDIV: Sen. Gary Peters volunteered in Flint on Monday

FLINT, Mich. - Senator Gary Peters was in Flint Monday getting a firsthand look at what residents are dealing with on a daily basis.

Peters joined volunteers who donated bottled water and handed it out to those in need.

“All sorts of volunteers are coming out to help the Red Cross and groups that are distributing water,” Peters said. “But the important thing to remember is this can’t continue. People can’t live on bottled water. You can’t shower. You can’t bathe. It’s hard to cook. This is not a way to live.

Like Mayor Karen Weaver, Peters has urged the need for funding to go to Flint to help remove lead pipes. Gov. Rick Snyder wants to wait on more testing although he working to get millions to deal with infrastructure needs.

“What we have to do is we have to get these pipes fixed, we’ve got to replace pipes,” Peters said. “That’s what I’m working on in Washington to help provide the resources so we can pull these lead pipes out and put new ones in.”

High profile activist Erin Brockovich has also joined the fight to help represent the people of Flint in a class action lawsuit.
