Senator Gary Peters is holding a hearing Thursday morning to investigate the issues the federal government, specifically the Department of Defense, had on Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances exposure in Michigan and beyond.
PFAS have been found in more than 200 sites across the state, especially near the decommissioned Wurtsmith Air Base in Oscoda. A recent report showed the military failed to properly handle and dispose of PFAS chemicals on base.
PFAS have been an issue in many sites and usually public companies are responsible so this hearing focuses on sites resulting from government abuse.
“It can be cleaned up, there’s no question about it. It’s expensive, it takes time but it can be cleaned up and some of that operation is going on in sites in Michigan, in Oscoda for example,” said Peters, “They are trying to pull this material out and filter the water appropriately but it is something that has to be done and has to be done soon.”
