Port Huron Times Herald: Sen. Gary Peters talks business in the Blue Water Area

About 20 people filled a small room at the Blue Water Convention Center Monday morning to talk business with U.S. Sen. Gary Peters.

The topics were international commerce, small business and manufacturing, among others. The event was hosted by the Blue Water Area Chamber of Commerce.

Peters told the audience of local business owners and community leaders that he is working aggressively to secure funding for the customs plaza at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.

He said Port Huron and Detroit are both in the top five busiest border crossings in the country.

Peters said driving through customs on the Blue Water Bridges needs to balance keeping people safe with minimizing inconvenience. He said delivering that combination requires more money be invested in the infrastructure of the bridge.

James Semerad, Grayfox commander, said he was happy to hear that Peters had a focus on international trade.

“The amount of trade that is exchanged between Port Huron and Sarnia is enormous,” Semerad said. “We have an issue of (the ease) of passenger travel between Canada and the U.S. that needs to be resolved.”
