MANISTEE — On Wednesday, United States Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) paid a visit to the Manistee News Advocate office, which sits a block away from a recently revitalized River Street and a mere mile from Lake Michigan.
Fittingly, Manistee represents much of what the first-term senator considers priority in his public service to the state. On what’s considered Start-Up Day Across America, Peters spoke to the News Advocate about his focus on small businesses and the economic impact of waterfront communities utilizing the Great Lakes.
“Success in all communities starts with small businesses and start-ups,” he said. “It’s about being supportive of small businesses on main street, and one area I focus a great deal of my attention is on financing to make sure small businesses have access to money to be able to start and grow their business.
“That often can be challenging … if you don’t have financing, you can’t have a business, so I work in that area a lot.”
