Peters-Backed Historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill Signed Into Law

U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) helped enact the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act — a major investment in Michigan infrastructure, including in our roads and bridges, high-speed internet, electric vehicles and the Great Lakes. This legislation will strengthen our economic security and make our infrastructure more sustainable, resilient, and equitable.

This bill takes a number of critical steps to:

  • Create good-paying jobs – including union jobs;
  • Ensure infrastructure projects are done right the first time to boost resiliency, which saves taxpayer dollars for the future,
  • Invest the largest amount in the Great Lakes ever, and;
  • Combat climate change which is already threatening Michigan and the Great Lakes.

Peters has made protecting the Great Lakes one of his top priorities in the U.S. Senate. As part of the bipartisan bill, Gary fought for and secured support for the STORM Act: his legislation that was signed into law in January 2021 which provides low-interest loans for local communities facing rising water levels, coastal erosion and flooding that has put homes, small businesses, property, and communities at risk, and caused millions of dollars in damages.

The bill also includes the largest investment in the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) since the program was established. The GLRI has been critical for cleanup and habitat restoration efforts in the Great Lakes. In 2019, Peters secured a bipartisan provision that was signed into law as to provide the first increase in GLRI support in a decade.
