In the 118th Congress, Gary serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senate Armed Services Committee, and Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.
Senator Peters is the Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The Committee's jurisdiction includes government operations generally and the Department of Homeland Security in particular. Its primary responsibilities are to study the efficiency, economy, and effectiveness of all agencies and departments of the federal government; evaluate the effects of laws enacted to reorganize the legislative and executive branches of government; and study the intergovernmental relationships between the U.S. and states and municipalities, and between the U.S. and international organizations of which the U.S. is a member.
Peters is the first Michigan senator to serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee in decades. The Appropriations Committee is responsible for drafting the legislation that allocates federal resources to government agencies, our national defense, and organizations on an annual basis.
